For Mums For Students How it works Contact

How to find a student midwife in Australia.

The plain-English guide to how MidwithMe shows you student midwives who can actually be there. How the search works. What we filter for. How chatting and pairing work. You're always the one who chooses.

01

How to browse student midwives near you.

Once you sign up and complete your profile, you get access to your Explore page. This is where you browse verified student midwives who can support your pregnancy and birth.

Every Explore page is personalised. The students shown to you are filtered based on your due date, where you're birthing, and where you live. The most active and responsive students appear first, so you can choose to connect with someone who'll actually show up.

02

How we find the right student midwives for you to choose from.

You should never see a student midwife you can't actually work with. Before anything else, MidwithMe filters who appears on your Explore page based on five things, so the students surfaced to you are the ones genuinely able to support your pregnancy and birth. From there, you choose who to connect with.

  • Where you're giving birth. The students you see are the ones who can be there at your hospital, or for your home birth.
  • How far they're willing to travel. Every student sets their own travel radius. If their radius doesn't reach you, they don't appear in your results. The ones who do show up have already said they'll come to you.
  • Where you live. Students near you are prioritised. If you've selected a birth hospital, that becomes the anchor point. If you haven't yet, your home address is used until you do.
  • Your state. Students are shown within your state.
  • Whether they're showing up. Students who aren't active on the platform, or who leave mums waiting, don't appear in your results. The ones you see are the ones genuinely engaging with the platform and the mums on it.

Hospital rules and home births in Australia.

Not every Australian hospital lets student midwives attend births in the same way. Some hospitals welcome it openly. Some have rules about which students can support which mums. A small number don't allow it at all. These are the hospitals' own policies, not ours.

MidwithMe has done the research for you and built every hospital's rules into the platform. When you select your birth hospital, the Explore page only shows you student midwives who can actually be there for your birth. You don't need to figure any of it out yourself.

Planning a home birth? Select that in your profile. Home births are linked to an affiliate hospital in your area, and the same matching rules still apply in the background, so the right student midwives still find you.

A note on accuracy

Hospital policies change. Placement agreements update. We keep our records as current as we can, and we update them often. If something looks off when you're chatting with a student, please confirm with them directly that they can support you at your birth location. If anything is out of date, let us know. We genuinely want it right.

04

Why some student midwives appear before others.

Once MidwithMe has filtered for which student midwives can actually be there for your birth, the order they appear in isn't random either.

Students who reply quickly, stay engaged, and genuinely show up for the mums they connect with appear at the top. Students who go quiet on conversations slide down. Students who repeatedly leave mums waiting drop off the visible list entirely.

This is built in on purpose. The student midwives you see on Explore aren't a list of everyone available. They're a shortlist of the people most likely to actually be there for you, when you need them.

The order updates throughout the day, every day, based on real activity.

05

When a student midwife is unavailable or has finished.

Sometimes a student midwife temporarily steps away from the platform. They might be on placement, sitting exams, or just need a few days off. When that happens, they don't appear in your Explore results.

When they're back, their profile becomes visible again automatically. No action from you needed.

Once a student has finished the experience portion of their training and isn't taking new connections, their profile is hidden from new searches. Conversations with mums they've already connected with stay open.

06

How to connect and pair with a student midwife.

Two steps. They mean different things, and you do them in order.

Step one: Connect

When you find a student who feels like a possible fit, you send a connection request. That opens a chat. The student gets a notification and can reply. You can connect with as many students as you'd like while you're getting a feel for who suits you. There's no commitment yet.

Step two: Pair

Once you've decided on the student you'd like to walk through your journey with, you send a pair request. This is the formal commitment step. Once you pair, you can't connect with new students. Pairing is the "we're doing this together" moment.

Take your time. Chat with a few. Pair when you feel sure.
