What's a continuity of care experience?
Every Australian midwifery student spends part of their degree following a small number of women through pregnancy, birth, and the early weeks after. It’s how they learn the heart of the job, and it’s where a lot of mums find extra support they didn’t know was available.
What your student can do
- Translate the medical bits into plain language
- Get to know your birth preferences early and advocate for them
- Offer emotional and physical support through labour. Back rubs, ice chips, a hand to hold
- Check in and see how you’re feeling
- Listen when you just need someone who knows your story
- Be there for your partner and support people too
- Work under the supervision of your existing care team
- Be a steady, familiar presence across the whole journey
What your student can’t do
- Replace your midwife, OB, or hospital care team
- Perform clinical procedures unsupervised
- Make clinical decisions on their own
- Give medical advice or prescribe medication
What they need to complete
- At least 4 antenatal appointments alongside you
- Labour and birth, if you’re comfortable having them there
- At least 2 postnatal visits once bub arrives
Universities and hospitals may set differing scopes and rules. MidwithMe is not affiliated with universities or hospitals.
The earlier, the better, but later is fine too.
Most mums find their student between confirmation of pregnancy and before 28 weeks. Joining later still works as most students will gladly come on board even in the third trimester.
