What is a student midwife?

Student midwives are training to become registered midwives. As part of their studies, they provide care to pregnant women under supervision. They can attend your appointments, be at your birth, and support you in the early weeks.

🩺

Are they qualified?

Student midwives are in their final years of university training. They work under supervision and follow strict guidelines. They can't replace your regular midwife or doctor, but they can be there alongside your care team.

🤝

What is the CoCE?

The Continuity of Care Experience is part of midwifery training. It means one student can follow your whole journey, from pregnancy through birth and into early motherhood. Learn more in our FAQs.

Why choose a student midwife?

Everything you need to know

Answers to questions mums ask us most often about student midwives and the CoCE program.

The CoCE is a special program where student midwives follow a mum's pregnancy journey from early pregnancy through to birth and postpartum, under supervision. It's a chance for you to receive ongoing support while helping a student learn through real experience.
Consistent support from a caring student midwife throughout your pregnancy. An additional support option for your existing birth team, not a replacement. A friendly, familiar face during appointments, birth, and postnatal care. Access to tools that help you stay organised, including your personal dashboard, weekly birth checklist, and brand partner discounts.
The earlier the better, ideally between pregnancy confirmation and 28 weeks. This gives you time to find your student and build a supportive relationship. You can still join up to 34 weeks and participate successfully.
Yes. During the Continuity of Care program, you can change your student midwife at any time if things aren't the right fit. You're also free to withdraw from the program entirely if you choose to.
Once paired, you'll be asked to consider offering opportunities across key stages, typically at least four antenatal visits, supporting them during labour and birth if you're comfortable, and at least two postnatal visits. These requirements may vary slightly between universities.
Yes. You can select "home birth" when creating your profile. Some universities have specific policies about home births, so your student can confirm this with you.
The app prioritises students who have your hospital listed as a placement restriction first. You can still connect with other students nearby further down the list, they're absolutely eligible to support you.
